  • Why does my fuel economy drop in the Fall and Winter?

     There are a number of explanations for this occurence.  In colder weather, engines are sometimes idled longer to warm up the engine.  Also the air pressure in tires drops 1-2 pounds with each 10 degree drop in temperature according to Goodyear.  The US Department of Energy claims that an under-inflated tire lowers gas mileage by 0.3 percent for every 1 psi drop in all four tires.  Tires should be checked at least monthly for proper inflation, or sooner if a sudden change in temperature or seasons occurs.   However, the primary cause for lower MPG starting in September is due to a change in fuel blends.  The composition of gas formulations is changed during the hot summer months from the colder winter months in order to meet emissions and air quality standards.  "Summer blend" gasoline has a lower vapor pressure than "winter blend" gas to prevent evaporation during hot temperatures.  Consequently summer gas evaporates less and  contributes less to the “evaporative emissions” which represent million of gallons of gasoline per year evaporated in the air.  Winter gas is more volatile and evaporates more quickly, so it is ideal for use in the colder air of winter.  Winter blend gasoline has about 2% less energy value than summer blend gasolines.   And this is without accounting for various ethanol blends which have about 34% less energy value than regular gas.  In summary, you will typically see lower MPG during use of winter blend fuels.  The US Environmental Protection Agency requires gas stations to carry summer blend fuels no later than June 1st, and switch to winter blend fuels no later than September 15th.  Use of DurAlt® Fuel Conditioner helps to improve fuel economy regardless of the season by more fully combusting the fuel.

  • Will DurAlt® Fuel Conditioner help problems caused by ethanol fuel blends?

     Absolutely.  Most gasoline sold in the United States today contain at least 10% ethanol (ethyl alcohol) or E-10.  Unfortunately ethanol naturally attracts water.  Water finds its way into fuel storage tanks from loosely fitting caps, condensation, and even when fuel is delivered.  Water will be absorbed by the ethanol to a saturation level (E-10 fuel will absorb 0.5% water by volume at 60 degrees F).  Once it reaches this saturation level, the ethanol/water mixture separates from the fuel and falls to the bottom of the fuel tank since it now has higher density than the original blended fuel.   Water bonded with ethanol lowers the fuel octane causing performance problems.  Excessive water in the fuel tank causes engines to run rough, stall, and leads to damage to internal engine components. Ethanol also produces 25 to 30 per cent less energy than straight gasoline which means you get fewer miles to the gallon on E-10.  Ethanol affects the shelf-life of fuel.  With ethanol in the fuel, it breaks down quickly.  With the ethanol and other components evaporating from the fuel, it then becomes "stale". This will cause hard starts, engine knock and pinging, which robs the engine of its power and can cause damage. Ethanol  also acts as a solvent breaking down existing sludge, made up of varnish, gum and resins that commonly builds up in fuel tanks, allowing those particles to clog fuel filters, injectors & carburetors.  DurAlt Fuel Conditioner stabilizes fuel for at least a year, substantially inhibits tank corrosion, reduces gum formation and reduces condensation through its water tolerance properties.  Consequently some moisture will actually dissolve during the combustion process. DurAlt creates a more uniform and complete combustion process improving MPG while reducing deposit formation.  This reduces the octane requirement of the engine allowing higher performance engines to operate on lower octane fuels.    Small engines, including lawnmowers, snowblowers, chain saws, weed whackers, and boats will run more smoothly avoiding the problems caused by ethanol fuel blends.  As a plus DurAlt typically costs less to use than other additives providing a much higher Return on Investment.

  • What is DurAlt® Fuel Conditioner made of?

        This multi-patented technology begins by mixing a cut of crude oil with oxygen and proprietary catalysts in a reactor.  As this mixture is subjected to extreme heat, the molecules become polarized (a polar molecule has concentrations of positive and negative electric charges).  The resulting polarized product has been determined by the EPA to be “substantially similar” to fuel and will therefore not void the manufacturers warranty.  DurAlt® is a non-hazardous, non-carcinogenic material.  

  •     Is DurAlt® EPA approved?

        Yes.  DurAlt® is the original patented name of this fuel additive, and it is registered with the EPA.  The EPA has analyzed DurAlt® and considers DurAlt® to be “substantially similar” to fuel, making it legal for bulk introduction into gasoline or diesel fuels.  Consequently it will cause no more harm to an engine or emissions equipment than using fuel in your engine would cause.

  •    How long before I see improvement in my fuel economy?

        It is difficult to give an answer that applies to all vehicles since every vehicle differs in maintenance and mileage.  We recommend use for at least three months to give DurAlt® time to improve combustion and clean out the engine.  However during that time, the product will be lubricating the upper cylinders, cleaning the piston crowns and injectors, and removing combustion chamber deposits.  Your vehicle will run smoother with better lubrication, will have reduced emissions, and you will see increased MPG very soon!

  •    Why does the product have such a distinct smell?

         DurAlt® has a distinct sweet odor due to its unique blend of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen materials.  Its specific molecular structure is an aromatic hydrocarbon product.  We recommend that you keep your bottle of fuel conditioner upright to prevent any leaking.  If desired, you may use a zip-lock bag with an absorbent cloth to absorb any drips.  This will prevent any odors inside your vehicle when you store the bottle in the door of your car.  If you get any product on your hands, wash your hands or use a hand cleaner to remove the smell.

  •   How do I know the product is working?

      You should "baseline" your fuel usage before using the product.  Reset your odometer trip meter when you add fuel at the fueling station.  Record the number of miles you traveled and how many gallons you added.  Divide the number of miles by the number of gallons added to get MPG (miles per gallon).  Do the same calculation while using the product -- you will eventually see the MPG increase as the product cleans the carbon deposits out of your engine and combustion chamber.  Some higher mileage vehicles may need to go through a number of tanks of fuel before significant fuel economy improvements are observed.  However, during that time the product will be lubricating the upper cylinders, cleaning the piston crowns and injectors, and removing combustion chamber deposits.

  •   How does DurAlt® clean the combustion chamber carbon deposits?

        Fuel molecules are naturally configured in a cluster arrangement, which leads to uneven combustion and the deposit of residual carbon in an engine’s combustion chamber (known as Combustion Chamber Deposits).  DurAlt®’s unique polar formulation causes dispersion between the fuel molecules.  This greater spacing between molecules causes a more uniform and complete combustion event resulting in higher MPG and reduced emissions.

  •     Why does DurAlt® work in both diesel and gasoline engines?

        Because DurAlt® begins as a crude oil product, through the refining process we produce a product which the EPA considers to be “substantially similar” to fuel, thus allowing DurAlt® to work in all types of engines.

  •     How does DurAlt® improve performance in my vehicle?

        By creating a more uniform and complete combustion event, DurAlt® provides the horsepower originally designed by the engine manufacturer.  There is little or no loss of power due to incomplete combustion, as experienced in untreated fuels.

  •    Is DurAlt® a hazardous material?

  •     How do I mix DurAlt® in diesel fuel?

  •     How does DurAlt® extend my engines maintenance cycle?

        By creating a more uniform and complete combustion, DurAlt® greatly reduces the formation of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber.  DurAlt® disperses the fuel molecules resulting in reduced fuel injector clogging.  DurAlt® provides enhanced lubricity in the fuel and helps reduce wear on engine parts.  Combined, this causes less wear and stress on the engine.

  •     Why does DurAlt® decrease visible smoke in the exhaust of my engine?

        A large cause of visible smoke is the result of incomplete fuel combustion.  The smoke is the fuel particulates that have not fully combusted and have not attached to the combustion chamber.  DurAlt® promotes complete combustion and can reduce particulate emissions by 40% to 60%.

  •     Why does DurAlt® decrease hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions in the exhaust of my engine?

        Hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide emissions are the result of incomplete fuel combustion.  DurAlt® promotes complete combustion and can reduce these emissions by up to 43% and 22% respectively.

  •     Why does DurAlt® decrease engine vibrations?

        Cycle-to-cycle combustion variability causes most engine vibrations.  By improving the air/fuel mixing and reducing combustion chamber carbon deposits, variations in the quantity of fuel and unintended carbon deposit burns decrease.  The result is less erratic combustion and reduced engine vibration.

  •     What are the long-term effects of using DurAlt® in my engine?

  •     How does DurAlt® reduce the octane requirement on my gasoline engine?

        Gasoline detergents and basic engine inefficiencies cause engines to lose performance over time.  This performance loss causes auto manufacturers to require a higher grade of gasoline in order to run within specifications.  DurAlt® promotes more uniform and complete combustion and returns performance levels to engine manufacturers’ original specifications.  This allows the engine to run on lower octane fuel without sacrificing performance.

  •     Will DurAlt® damage my catalytic converter?

        No.  The EPA considers DurAlt® to be “substantially similar” to fuel and contain the same components that a catalytic converter is designed to treat.

  •     Will DurAlt® damage my fuel lines?

        No.  DurAlt® as an anti-corrosive reduces oxidation in the fuel tank and does not contain any corrosive components that will harm fuel lines.  DurAlt® is intended to be used with every tank of fuel.

  •     Does DurAlt® work as well in an engine with a carburetor as in one with a fuel injector?

        Yes.  DurAlt®’s technology provides for less clustering of fuel molecules resulting in less clogging and more complete combustion in all engines.

  •     Does DurAlt® improve mileage in all vehicles?

        Yes.  By providing a more uniform dispersion of fuel molecules and a complete combustion event, more of the fuel is burned.  This results in better performance and increased fuel economy of 8%-12% on average for fleets, and typically higher for individual consumers.

  •     What kinds of tests have been performed on DurAlt®?

        DurAlt® has been tested for over 25 years.  Tests have been performed by independent third party laboratories, fleet users, multi-national fuel and additive companies, auto manufacturers and by PMC itself.  DurAlt® is protected by 54 patents and trademarks worldwide.

  •     Is DurAlt® toxic?

        No.  DurAlt®'s chemical makeup has been evaluated by the EPA and has been found to be “substantially similar” to fuel.  DurAlt® is non-hazardous and non-carcinogenic.  

  •     Does DurAlt® work with low sulfur diesel fuel?

        Yes.  DurAlt®’s patented technology increases cetane levels by up to 3 points, enhances lubricity and is the perfect product to be used with low sulfur diesel fuel.

  •     Does DurAlt® contain any anti-foam agents?

        Yes.  DurAlt® will reduce foaming effects while fueling.

  •     Does DurAlt® have anti-microbial properties?

        Yes.  DurAlt® has been tested on cultures of Cladosporium resinae (#22712 and 52833) and Yarrowia lypolutica (#20255 and 46484).  Fuel treated with DurAlt® has been proven to virtually eliminate these microbes.

  •     Does DurAlt® help stabilize fuel?

        Yes.  DurAlt® has been tested on deteriorated fuels and shown to restore the fuel within 30 days.  A single treatment of DurAlt® will provide fuel stabilization for up to one full year.  

  •     Does DurAlt® contain detergents?

        No.  DurAlt® is an oil-based product.  However, DurAlt® provides many of the same benefits as detergents (reduced emissions and increased fuel economy).  DurAlt® will remove detergent deposits in the combustion chamber and increase performance.

  •     How does DurAlt® differ from detergents?
